Catalogue of Works in the Musee Rodin
This is a catalogue raisonne of Rodin’s bronzes. There are 455 entries with over a thousand pictures in 2 volumes. Each work lists the inventory number, the technique and a bibliography. Information about provenance and historical context along with comparison to other works is also included. The research is meticulous and the cross-references invaluable. Four essays preface the catalogue. They discuss techniques, the relationship with the founders and the legal issues surrounding Rodin’s sculpture. The discussions are innovative and original in their approach. These scholars have had access to previously unknown archive material, and many of the objects are illustrated for the first time. This is an accessible and vital tool in the study of Rodin’s work. It will update and surpass the 1976 book on bronzes and will be consulted for years to come. Distributed by Lund Humphries in association with the Reunion des Musees Nationaux.
